Care options

Understanding your care options

The terms can be confusing. Here’s a plain-English guide to the four main types of senior care in Northwest Arkansas, and who each one is usually for.

Types of senior care

Least help

Independent Living

An apartment or cottage in a community built for older adults. Residents live on their own, with meals, housekeeping, activities, and neighbors close by.

Often a good fit when

  • They’re healthy and handle daily life on their own
  • Keeping up a house has become too much
  • They’re lonely or isolated and would enjoy more company
Daily help

Assisted Living

A private apartment with staff available around the clock to help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and medications. Meals, housekeeping, and activities are included.

Often a good fit when

  • They need help with a few daily tasks
  • Medications are getting missed or mixed up
  • Living alone no longer feels safe, but they don’t need full-time nursing care
Dementia care

Memory Care

A secure, specially designed setting for people living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Staff are trained in memory care, and daily routines are built to ease confusion and keep residents safe.

Often a good fit when

  • Memory loss or confusion is affecting their safety
  • They wander or have tried to leave home
  • They need more supervision and structure than assisted living offers
Stay at home

In-Home Care

Caregivers come to the home for a few hours a day or more, helping with things like bathing, meals, light housekeeping, errands, and companionship.

Often a good fit when

  • They want to stay home, and home is still safe
  • They need help with some daily tasks, but not around the clock
  • A family caregiver needs a break

Every person is different, and many communities offer more than one level of care. We’ll help you sort out what makes sense for your family.
